On behalf of Northwestern University, I offer our support and sympathy to everyone affected by the recent disaster in Haiti, both the people there and their many friends and relatives in the Chicago area.
Many organizations have mobilized to assist the relief efforts in Haiti and I urge members of the Northwestern community to join in these efforts. Our Department of Latin and Caribbean Area Studies has compiled a list of organizations providing emergency relief there. I appreciate the leadership of the department in doing this. The list is available at: http://www.wcas.northwestern.edu/lacs/documents/Helping%20Haiti.pdf
In addition, Northwestern students who are members of GlobeMed, a network of university students who partner with grassroots organizations around the world to improve the health of the impoverished, are working with Partners In Health, which provides health care for the poor around the world. To support the Partners In Health efforts, go to: http://www.pih.org/home.html
As you may know, Evanston has a sizeable Haitian community, and relief efforts are also being coordinated by local community groups. A Haitian Crisis Relief Fund has been established and donations may be sent to that organization at 1227 Dodge Avenue, Evanston, IL 60202. For more information, contact the Haitian Congress at 847-475-5856.
Other members of the Northwestern community undoubtedly will be organizing and participating in additional initiatives to aid Haiti in the days ahead. I urge all members of the community to engage and support these efforts. Our help is greatly needed.
